Game of Thrones 4x09 'The Watchers on the Wall' TV TALK

Episode nine of every series is always the epic, 'stuff-goes-down', episode of the series and while this episode was no different, it wasn't as good as the previous ones we had. While the fight was awesome and chaotic to watch, not much really happened.
I will also say that the music was ace- it built up all the fighting and worked really well behind every scene.

SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD
The wildlings finally attack. It's been a long time coming.
It's complete and utter chaos- we spend most of the episode simply watching people be decapitated and cut open.

I'm honestly really shocked that the wildlings didn't win- there's 100,000 of them and we didn't see most of them! When they fail to open the tunnel once with the mammoth and giant (!!!) they just don't try again! And I also thought it was super bad strategy when the next giant opened up the tunnel gate and went straight through, leaving the gate to close behind him. Wouldn't it be much more effective to keep the gate open as long as possible to let other wildlings through to kill everyone? Like.... 100,000 other wildlings??? Their own stupidity is what led to their downfall.
Some even tried to climb the wall which I also found stupid because it takes ages to climb the wall! How they heck did they think they'd make it all the way up there? But, I will say, that the giant scythe the Night's Watch dropped on them all was awesome!
Ghost also jumped in to help which made me good and happy.
Through this whole thing, Gilly is safe and sound with Sam Jr, and Samwell even makes a move on her which is cute but.... we all totally saw it coming.
We weren't going to make it through this episode without a few casualties- that was to be expected.
Ser Alliser is the first to fall, though he didn't actually die. Pyp dies after making his first kill.
And then we have Ygritte.... and I don't know how I feel about it. Yes, I liked her. Yes, I thought her and Jon were sweet together but.... we didn't spend enough time with them as a couple for it to be truly heart-breaking. It hurt that Jon had to watch but.... I'm not devastated- this was no Red Wedding.
I think the death that hit me the hardest was Grenn! He went down to hold the gate at the tunnel, and dammit, he did! He gave his life to succeed and it hit me quite hard.
So, some how, they held the wildlings off for the night and Jon Snow thinks it's a great idea to go on a suicide mission. Because just sauntering up to the wildlings and murdering their leader is going to be a piece of cake!
