This episode was definitely better than the first. We singled in on certain characters and really got a better understanding of how the whole park works- settling many of my niggling questions. I also like how we got to follow a newcomer on his first journey to Westworld- it gave us an opportunity to learn along with him.
Many things were explained in this episode and I think it was extremely necessary. This episode left me with many theories and a quickly growing addiction.
TV TALKS
Season 1: 1x01
SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD
It's really hard to review this because I have no clue where and who to start with...
Let's begin with our two newcomers; Logan (aka. Prince Caspian) and William (the Golden Boy). It's implied that Logan's been to Westworld before but this was William's first time. I liked having a character that was learning things alone with us- we got to see him preparing an outfit for Westworld and taking the train there. I think this was a vital insight into the inner workings of the park.
Logan and William are complete opposites and yet I liked both of them. William seems like he'll take a hero role somehow and, even though Logan was arrogant and self-involved, he made me laugh. I'm easy to win over, apparently...
I was also able to piece some things together and can now theorise with a bit more conviction. when William is preparing to enter Westworld, he asks the sexy host if the guns are real and she replies
with 'real enough'. Now this can open a lot of questions and potentially answer many uncertainties from last episode. I think the weapons are specialised and don't have actual bullets but maybe substitutes that can only kill hosts- explaining why guests have never been hurt before. Because, honestly, if the bullets were real, surely a guest must've been accidentally hurt before in one of the shoot-outs? This weapon that can only 'kill' robots would be a superb explanation of this.
Also, that could hint that the Man in Black is human! That's why he's not hurt by the bullets- because he's a guest and they can't physically hurt him. He can't be an android because why would the bullets kill hosts but not him? I think he's definitely human.
Over to Dolores who is slowly remembering bits and pieces from the real world. We have this recurring Shakespeare phrase 'These violent delights have violent ends' which is showing that she's malfunctioning. Also, at the end we see a little bit of interest come from William when he sees her...dropping a can like always...klutz. Possible storyline? Would a relationship between a host and human be possible? I suppose so.
And we have Bernard (The Hunger Games' Beetee) having secret meetings with Dolores... And I don't know why. He could very well be experimenting something on her to improve the hosts but... I'm suspicious. Could he possibly be sabotaging everything? I've heard a theory that he's actually a host that broke the hold and is now trying to spread that over to the other hosts through Dolores. That'd be quite cool and is downright plausible...
Bernie also has a little secret of him and Theresa having a workers with benefits relationship which is a little out of the blue. It was random thing to add but I'll take it with a pinch of salt and see where it leads us.
We spent the main chunk of the episode with Maeve and I loved this- she's one of my favourite characters currently. Maeve begins to get 'nightmares' which are basically memories after hearing the phrase 'these violent delights have violent ends' from Dolores. As the hosts are controlled through voice activation, this phrase is working like a contagious virus of sorts that almost wakes them up.
Maeve begins to remember her past lives and it's so intriguing to watch. She manages to wake herself up straight into the tech team's facility when they're working on her! I love how she stood up for herself and tried to get away- it must've been bizarre to realise that you're whole life is a lie. And now she'll probably remember the whole thing. I can't wait to see her try and figure out what's happening.
Then we have the Man in Black (MiB). We find out that he's looking for a maze as there was a picture of it on the back of a previous guy's skull. It was mentioned earlier that the further you go into Westworld, the more intense it is and I'm going forward with the assumption that the maze is in the deepest part of Westworld- kinda turning this whole theme park into a game. But what's the prize for completing the maze? Mib gets the information he wants and is now in full search for it but the tech team don't seem too worried about him... which has me even more confused. He must be a guest otherwise the tech team would've pulled the host out by now- especially as he'd be a host malfunctioning and going off script.
Finally, we had Ford visiting his own creation and revealing that he has a new and unique idea for Westworld that he's been working on for a while. Intriguing....
Thanks for reading! Feel free to comment your thoughts- any theories? Stay amazing!
