Mean Girls the Musical SOUNDTRACK REVIEW

Here we are again, getting obsessed with yet another musical.
How to describe Mean Girls? Well, seeing as though I describe Heathers as "Mean Girls with a lot more death", I'll describe Mean Girls as "Heathers with a lot less death." The 2004 movie Mean Girls is actually based off the 1988 movie Heathers so... it sparks the debate of which is better (spoiler alert: it's Heathers).
Despite my overwhelming loyalty to Heathers, I thought I'd give Mean Girls a try and I'll be brutally honest and say that, at first, I didn't like it at all. Sure, there were a couple of songs that were okay but I wasn't all that fussed. Then I saw a Youtube clip of the entire musical and everything changed! Seeing Broadway songs performed is always better and I grew to actually like most of the songs (though I do still skip quite a few)! And since then, I've listened to the soundtrack non-stop and wanted to write a review!!
My favourite songs of the soundtrack are Apex Predator, Someone Gets Hurts and World Burn (mainly because Taylor Louderman who plays Regina George has the most stunning voice). Other than Regina, my favourite characters is also Janis because I can relate to her on a personal level ad she's also played by Barrett Wilbert Weed who is phenomenal (and incidentally played Veronica in Heathers).

A Cautionary Tale
I didn't really like this song at first but, after seeing a Youtube clip of it, it's grown on me! Janis and Damien are easily my favourite characters and this is a nice little introduction to the musical. This song can get super catchy and caught in my head for days on end so be careful!!

It Roars
I do like this song but sometimes it gets a little tedious. This song is nice to listen to but it gets boring after a while and goes on a bit too long for my taste. Cady isn't one of my favourite characters, so I also tend to prefer the songs she doesn't solo.

Where Do You Belong?
I didn't like this song when I first listened to it but I don't even know how that happened! Because I love it now! Damien is the best and this song is brilliantly full of jazz and a whole lot of camp. It's funny, it catchy and it has this infectious feeling where you just can't help but dance to it.

Meet the Plastics
This is the Candy Store (Heathers) of Mean Girls.
I love this song- it's super fun to sing and act out. Regina George's section is definitely the best part of this song because she slays everything she sings!! I love how powerful and slow and sassy all of Regina's lines are- they're so much fun to sing and put yourself into such a confident persona. I also love Gretchen's part because it's so fast and feel-good.

Stupid With Love
This was another song that really grew on me. I wasn't a massive fan at first but now I totally love it! It's a feeling I can totally relate to except you just have to substitute the math part with literature. (smart with lit, stupid with love). It's such a cute and feel-good song.

Apex Predator
This is the first song I ever heard from Mean Girls and it encapsulates the entire show beautifully- it's maybe my favourite of the soundtrack. I love the whole analogy of Regina being the Apex Predator because it's so cool and clever! The way the weave animalistic natures into the songs due to Cady's African background is so cool and it works so well. And, honestly, any song in this soundtrack which features Janis as a lead is one of my favourites.

What's Wrong With Me?
I think Gretchen is such an interesting character and this is the first song where you get to delve into her true feelings. It's actually a really sad song but it so beautifully highlights the pressures of fitting in and sort of reminds me of Heather Mcnamara's 'Lifeboat' from Heathers.

Stupid With Love (Reprise)
This is maybe an understated song because I actually normally skip it, though I don't know why. Aaron doesn't do much singing in this musical (the girls definitely take centre stage) but this is actually such a great song! It's got a lovely amount of humour and the harmonies of Aaron and Cady are on point!

Sexy
This is a song I usually, if not always, skip. It doesn't have any particular message or importance and it's basically just a filler within the show. I don't mind Karen's character- she's super funny at times- but this is just a song for the sake of having a song.

Someone Gets Hurt
Now this is my other favourite song of the musical and it is everything!! Regina George's songs are so sinister and cunning and this song is everything that is perfect about her. Not only does Taylor Louderman slay but you can also see just how smart Regina George is from this song. She so effortlessly pretends to be the victim and can manipulate Aaron to do what she wants in minutes! It really shows the true power Regina has and I absolutely love it! This song is powerful and the most thrilling song of the soundtrack.

Revenge Party
This is such a fun song! It's (yet again) a catchy tune and I want to dance to it every time I hear it. You can't help but have a little boogey to this song!! I'm always grinning through the whole thing. There's a lot of dialogue in this song which I don't really mind because a lot of it's really funny and, honestly, the 'Glen Coco' part is maybe the best of the entire show.

Fearless
I'm not overly in love with this song but I don't hate it either. It's got a nice, united feel to it but, frankly, my favourite part is when there's a mini Someone Gets Hurt Reprise. Again, Regina's so cunning and sinister and I fall in love with the sound of her voice! But, overall, this is a little underwhelming when you consider it's the act 1 finale. In other musicals, the act finale is epic and amazing and this song doesn't have enough impact to live up to all that. Frankly, Regina's part at the end saves the entire song.

Stop
This has the same feel to Where Do You Belong? (which makes sense because it's a Damien song). It's just as fun and quirky and feel-good but I think I skip this song simply because it goes on too long. There are so many great songs in this soundtrack that are only a couple of minutes but this one feels like it goes on forever!

What's Wrong With Me? (Reprise)
Yet another song that I skip!! (It sounds really bad that I'm skipping so many songs but I swear, it's a great soundtrack!). I just don't care too much for Regina's mum and this isn't as good as the original song.

Whose House Is This?
Again... I skip it! I don't really like this song at all. I don't like Kevin's rapping and this song doesn't really have a catchy melody or... any redeemable qualities, really. It's kind of Heathers' 'Big Fun' but not nearly as fun.

More Is Better
This song is a lovely ballad that stands against all the big production and dance numbers. I love the message in this song and I also love Aaron getting a bit more spotlight. His and Cady's duets are the sweetest and most calming things.

Someone Gets Hurt (Reprise)
This is an example of an amazing song that's just too short!! Janis sings an epic version of this song but it's not even a minute long! Nevertheless, every precious second is perfect and I feel so much love for Barrett Wilbert Weed!

World Burn
This is another of my favourite songs, surprise surprise, because Regina is epic!! I'll admit that I'm not a huge huge fan of the tail end of this song because it all gets a little crazy and overwhelming but the rest is pure genius. The beginning part is the best with Regina repeating her Meet the Plastics refrain but making it even more sinister!!! This is such a fun song to belt out when no one's home (though, my neighbours probably think I'm being murdered).

I'd Rather Be Me
Unsurprisingly, this is another of my favourites because it's Janis!!! Barrett Wilbert Weed absolutely smashes this song and I love listening and singing along to this one- there's so much infectious attitude and confidence. I love how this song challenges gender expectations and literally holds a middle finger to how girls are expected to behave. This is a perfect song for Janis, a perfect song for Barrett Wilbert Weed and a perfect song to listen to. I would listen to this on repeat all day if I could.

Do This Thing
I don't really listen to this song. It's got Kevin's rapping again and it's only a maths contest- hardly the most entertaining part of this musical.

I See Stars
This is a nice and calming song to finish off the musical but, again, I get a little bored with it so don't usually listen to it.

Thanks for reading! Feel free to comment your thoughts. Stay amazing!
