Riverdale 1x04 'Chapter Four: The Last Picture Show' TV TALK

A lot happened in this episode and all of it as compelling as always. We had major reveals (although, every episode has major reveals) and I'm so excited to see everything progress so quickly. Clues are being dropped left and right but it's still impossible to figure out who the murderer is! The whole mystery is addictive and I find myself falling into a deep obsession...

SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD
I like to think of this episode as the Downfall of Grundy which, let's face it, was a long time coming.
From the very beginning, Betty suspects something happening between Archie and Grundy which is a completely fair assumption.

Archie's dad, Fred, invites Grundy for a meal with him and Archie which was beautifully awkward and entertaining to watch. Whilst there, Betty pulls Archie aside and confronts him about Grundy which he can't exactly deny with all this evidence against him. He admits to it all and Veronica overhears as well. I'm so happy everyone knows because these guys need to gang up on Archie and knock some sense into him.
Despite Archie's asks for her to leave it alone, Betty sees through the haze of hot-teacher and decides to do some digging on Miss Grundy. She finds no information past a year which looks very suspicious from the start. But that doesn't satisfy her and Betty, along with a reluctant Veronica, breaks into Grundy's car to find more information. Luckily, Grundy's obviously an idiot too (match made in heaven for Archie) and leaves her gun and other ID in the car... because putting it somewhere much more secure would be too sensible a thing to do. The ID identifies her as Jennifer Gibson and what I can't wrap my head around is why anyone would voluntarily change their name to Geraldine Grundy. All I can assume is she wanted to appear weak and harmless and chose a dorky name to fit the role? But seriously...
Archie confronts Grundy and she tells him of her bad divorce and how she had to run away and change her name to get away from him. Archie buys it straight away (because anyone with that little brain cells would) but I'm immediately sceptical... I don't trust this chick one bit.
Now, this next bit was down to a stupid moment from Betty but I'll let her off because I love her (I'm so not biased at all).
Betty's mum, Alice, finds Grundy's gun that Betty hid in her room... which was admittedly a poor idea when you know your mum is a strict, drill-sergeant kind of mother who won't hesitate at searching your room. Alice immediately looks in Betty's diary for an explanation which was another poor choice from Betty because writing down every damn secret is bound to get into the wrong hands...
Alice drags Fred and Betty along when she confronts Archie and Grundy about their affair because... Alice is a total bitch. Alice threatens jail to Grundy and this is where Betty makes up for all her mistakes by brilliantly manipulating her mother. She did the whole, 'if you send Grundy to jail, I'll admit to breaking into Grundy's car, stealing the gun and will say she made the whole thing up'... clever girl. Betty is just that perfect.
Grundy gets away with only a slap on the wrist and being sent from Riverdale. Thank Gods she's gone because I couldn't handle her at all.
Meanwhile, Cheryl sees Veronica's mum, Hermione, with this biker guy and takes a picture to show Veronica. Hermione assures Veronica that she only knows this Southside Serpent from school but... somehow she's not very convincing.
Later on we have the drive-in show that bordered this whole episode. The Southside Serpents are loud and distracting and Veronica catches her mum paying off a Serpent. Hermione later reveals she was handling unfinished business for Hiram, who'd hired the serpents to help him get the movie property at a low price. I'll admit, a lot of these financial schemes go a little over my head but I know enough to not trust Hiram or Hermione when it comes to money. Or the Southside Serpents for that matter.
We have lovely Kevin hooking up with a young, hot serpent and when he goes home, we find that his house (specifically his dad, the Sheriff's, office) trashed. That means, whoever the murderer is, wasn't at the drive-in.... so much to think about!!
And finally, we finished the episode with Jughead leaving the drive-in once and for all. We find out that he'd been living there and that his dad is a serpent... Man, they end these episodes so well!

Thanks for reading! Feel free to comment your thoughts. Stay amazing!
