TV TALKS
SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD- SPOILERS AHEAD
We immediately get the clarification that Cheryl didn't kill Jason- when she said she was 'guilty', she meant for lying about July 4th. And that plot twist would've been really effective... if I hadn't guessed that from the moment the last episode ended. There was no way Cheryl killed Jason. But she does reveal the real story behind what went down that day: Jason was running away for unknown reasons and Cheryl helped him fake his death. So, this all shows that Jason was killed after July 4th which means the killer could be absolutely anyone!
Archie finally comes clean about hearing the gunshot but says he was walking his dog instead of getting Miss Grundy into trouble (because isn't lying to the police so romantic?). Regardless, Miss Grundy cancels their music lessons and Archie's dad, Fred grounds him for lying about the road trip he was supposed to be on with Jughead over July 4th.
Later on in the episode, Cheryl gives Archie a favour for telling his information to the police, getting him a place to observe and learn from the Pussycats. When the Pussycats then perform in front of everybody, we see Fred talking to Miss Grundy and all I want is for Fred to develop a crush on Miss Grundy- I think it'd be the best, most-twisted love triangle ever!
Meanwhile, Betty decided to revitalise the school newspaper, Blue and Gold, and recruits Jughead to help. And this.... is the start of a beautiful ship, no doubt.
Jughead questions the scout-troop leader, Dilton Doiley, because they were also by the river on July 4th (and why is the first time we're hearing of this!?!). Jughead finds out that the scout troop were the ones to shoot the gun but it was only a demonstration and wasn't the bullet that killed Jason- further showing that Jason can't have been killed on July 4th.
Jughead further investigates and Doiley finally reveals that he saw Miss Grundy's car by the river that day. Betty is immediately suspicious (and rightly so) but Jughead obviously knows that Grundy was with Archie... oh, the suspense! I can't wait for this to all blow up.
During this murder hunt, we have a separate little story line involving slut shaming and I thought it was quite entertaining. Veronica went out on a date with Chuck but was swiftly slut shamed and Betty finds more girls have suffered this treatment as well. We learn of a secret handbook and after some quick Nancy Drew-ing, the girls find this playbook- why the hell would the football team hide the playbook in such an easy, obvious and quick-to-find place?!
Looking through the playbook, they find Polly's name as Jason's conquest and this makes Betty go on a very dark path... which was so compelling to watch! Betty goes full bad-girl and invites Chuck straight into a set-up where they force the truth out of him. But... Betty goes full crazy-pants and pushes Chuck's head under the hot tub with her high heel (which I must admit was crazy but hot) and addresses him as Jason, saying 'say you're sorry for destroying me'. This had me seriously questioning Betty's sanity, especially when she said she couldn't remember doing that when Veronica asked. What's to stop Betty from thinking she's Polly briefly, killing Jason and then forgetting the whole insanity episode afterwards?
Nevertheless, their plan works and, after a well-written article in the Blue and Gold, Chuck and the others are booted off the football team and victory goes to the girls.
This was such a well-done and addictive episode and, as always, reveals so many possibilities as to who the murderer is.
Thanks for reading! Feel free to comment your thoughts. Stay amazing!
